Welcome to Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert is an open-world action RPG developed by Pearl Abyss, released March 19, 2026. Set on the war-torn continent of Pywel, the game follows Kliff, leader of the Greymane mercenaries, in their struggle against the Black Bears and the supernatural force known as the Abyss. The story spans a prologue plus 12 chapters, primarily set in the Hernand region.

This guide covers everything a new player needs to know, from basic controls to the progression systems that the tutorial only hints at.

Know Your Playable Characters

Crimson Desert features three playable characters. Understanding how they differ is critical before you invest time into the game.

CharacterRoleWeaponsPlaystyleStory Role
KliffVersatile leaderSword + BowBalanced offense/defense, adaptableMain story progression
DamianeNimble duelistShield + Light MagicFast counters, defensive parriesSide content only
OongkaPowerhouseDual Wield + HammerRaw damage, crowd controlSide content only

Important: Only Kliff progresses the main story. Damiane and Oongka are used for side content, contracts, and free-roam exploration. All three characters share a single inventory of 50 slots.

Which Character Should You Start With?

  • Kliff โ€” Start here. He is the protagonist and required for all main story chapters. His sword and bow combination handles every situation the game throws at you.
  • Damiane โ€” Switch to her for challenging duels and defensive encounters. Her shield and light magic excel at countering single tough opponents.
  • Oongka โ€” Ideal for clearing out outlaw camps and fighting groups. His dual-wield speed and hammer power make short work of crowds.

Display and Performance Settings

Before starting, adjust these settings for the best experience:

  1. Camera Sensitivity โ€” Lower it slightly from default. Precise camera control matters for parrying.
  2. Motion Blur โ€” Turn it off. It can obscure enemy attack animations during critical parry windows.
  3. HUD Opacity โ€” Keep it at default so you can clearly see your Stamina and Health bars.
  4. Performance Mode โ€” If on console, choose Performance Mode for 60fps. Smooth frame rates are essential for timed parries.

Understanding the HUD

Health, Stamina, and Spirit

  • Health Bar (top left) โ€” Your hit points. Depletes when hit. Restore with potions or cooked food.
  • Stamina Bar (below health) โ€” Used for dodging, sprinting, heavy attacks, and blocking. Regenerates automatically but drains fast in combat.
  • Spirit Gauge (below stamina) โ€” Fills through combat and parrying. Powers Abyss abilities and special skills.

Critical: Running out of Stamina mid-combat is the number one cause of death for new players. Always keep at least one dodgeโ€™s worth of Stamina in reserve. Parrying regenerates both Stamina and Spirit, making it the most important combat mechanic to master.

Minimap

  • Gold markers โ€” Main story objectives
  • Blue markers โ€” Side quests and NPC requests
  • Purple icons โ€” Sealed Abyss Artifacts (only visible on the mini-map, NOT the world map)
  • Large โ€?โ€ markers (world map) โ€” Abyss Nexuses (fast travel points)

Understanding Progression: No Traditional Levels

Crimson Desert does not use a traditional leveling system. There are no experience points or character levels. Instead, your character grows through Abyss Artifacts.

How Abyss Artifacts Work

Abyss Artifacts are collectible items that permanently upgrade your core attributes:

AttributeEffectPriority
StaminaDodging, sprinting, blocking, heavy attacksHighest
HealthTotal hit points, survivabilityHigh
SpiritPowers special abilities and Abyss skillsMedium

Sources of Abyss Artifacts

Abyss NexusesLarge โ€?โ€ on world mapOften require a puzzle or artifact to activate

Warning: Do NOT spend Abyss Artifacts on skills acquired through โ€œWatch and Learn.โ€ Save your artifacts for upgrading Stamina, Health, and Spirit. Watch-and-Learn skills should be unlocked by actually observing NPCs and enemies.

First Steps: The Prologue

When you first start the game, you play through the prologue as Kliff. This sequence introduces the Greymanes, the Black Bears, and the Abyss.

What the Prologue Teaches

  1. Basic combat โ€” Light attacks, heavy attacks, blocking
  2. Parry timing โ€” The most important mechanic in the entire game
  3. Movement and dodging โ€” Essential for battlefield survival
  4. Abyss introduction โ€” The Unknown Space section introduces Abyss Artifacts and Blinding Flash

Prologue Tips

  • Talk to every Greymane member in camp before the ambush. Several unlock side quests later that you cannot access otherwise.
  • Collect all loot during the escape sequence. You cannot return to the prologue area.
  • Do not skip the combat tutorials. Crimson Desertโ€™s parry timing is unique and requires practice.
  • Pay attention during the Unknown Space section. It introduces Blinding Flash, which you will use throughout the entire game.

Combat Fundamentals

Crimson Desertโ€™s combat rewards timing, positioning, and Stamina management over button-mashing. Master these basics early.

Attack Types

AttackSpeedDamageStaggerStamina Cost
Light AttackFastLowLowLow
Heavy AttackSlowHighHighMedium
Simultaneous Light + HeavyMediumVery HighMassiveHigh
Counter SkillFastHighHighLow (requires Keen Senses Level 3)

The Finishing Blow

When a boss or elite enemy is staggered ( posture broken), press Light Attack + Heavy Attack simultaneously to deal a devastating finishing blow. This is your highest-damage option and the key to melting boss health bars.

Tip: Cook Grilled Meat before every boss fight. The Health regeneration it provides is substantial and can be the difference between winning and dying.

Parrying: The Most Important Mechanic

Parrying is not optional in Crimson Desert. Successful parries:

  • Regenerate Stamina โ€” Keeps you in the fight longer
  • Regenerate Spirit โ€” Powers your special abilities
  • Build posture damage on enemies โ€” Leads to staggers and finishing blows
  • Create counter-attack windows โ€” With Keen Senses Level 3, unlocks Counter Skill

Critical: Invest in Keen Senses Level 3 as early as possible. The Counter Skill requires it and fundamentally changes combat from reactive to punishing.

Secondary Weapons

While each character has primary weapons, secondary weapons add tactical options:

Secondary WeaponBest ForKey Property
SpearsCrowd control, keeping distanceWide sweeping attacks, long reach
GreatswordsArmored enemies, breaking guardsWide swings, massive stagger

Grappling System

Grappling is a powerful close-quarters option that bypasses shields and armor:

MoveDescription
LariatGrapple and swing throw, good for positioning enemies
ClotheslineHorizontal takedown, excellent crowd control

Tip: Grappling is especially useful against shielded enemies who block your weapon attacks. Mix grapples into your combo strings to keep pressure on.

Crouch-Block with Small Shields

If you are using a small shield, you can crouch while blocking to significantly reduce Stamina drain from enemy attacks. This is essential for surviving sustained pressure from tough enemies and bosses.

Blinding Flash: Your Multi-Purpose Tool

Blinding Flash is an Abyss ability you acquire early in the story. It has three critical uses:

UseHow It Works
Solve PuzzlesIlluminates hidden mechanisms and symbols
Detect NexusesReveals nearby Abyss Nexuses in the environment
Burn VinesDestroys vine barriers blocking paths and hidden areas

Tip: Use Blinding Flash frequently while exploring. Many hidden areas and Abyss Nexuses are only detectable when you actively scan with it.

Equipment and Upgrades

Refining at the Blacksmith

Visit Turnali, the blacksmith in Hernand, to refine (upgrade) your weapons and armor. Refining increases base stats and is your primary path to stronger gear.

Socketing Abyss Cores

Equipment has socket slots where you insert Abyss Cores for passive buffs. Priority Abyss Cores for early game:

PriorityCoreBuff
1Stamina Core+10% Stamina โ€” biggest quality-of-life improvement
2Attack Core+5% Attack โ€” helps with all combat
3Defense Core+5% Defense โ€” survival buffer

Reinforcing Equipment (Temporary Buffs)

You can temporarily boost equipment using field resources:

MethodEffectSource
Grinding StonesTemporary weapon damage boostFound in the world, enemy drops
AnvilsTemporary armor defense boostFound in the world, camps

Note: Reinforcing is temporary and wears off. Use Grinding Stones and Anvils before tough fights, but do not rely on them as a permanent solution.

Fast Travel System

Crimson Desert has two types of fast travel points:

Abyss Nexuses

  • Appear as a large โ€?โ€ on the world map
  • Permanent fast travel locations once activated
  • Early ones are located near Enquisher Satlery and Hernand Castle
  • Often require solving a puzzle or offering an Abyss Artifact to activate

Abyss Cresets

  • Smaller fast travel points scattered throughout the world
  • Require solving a puzzle or finding a specific Abyss Artifact before they activate
  • More numerous than Nexuses but individually less significant

Tip: Activate every Nexus and Creset you find. Fast travel dramatically reduces backtracking and makes completing side content efficient.

Inventory Management

  • Your inventory has 50 slots, shared between all three characters (Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka).
  • Manage your inventory regularly โ€” sell or dismantle items you no longer need.
  • Store important materials at your camp stash to free up space.

Getting Life Tools

You need specific tools for gathering resources. Obtain all three Life Tools by completing the first three faction quests in Hernand:

ToolUseSource
Fishing RodCatch fish for food and incomeFirst faction quest in Hernand
Logging AxeChop timber for crafting and sellingSecond faction quest in Hernand
PickaxeMine ore for upgrading and sellingThird faction quest in Hernand

Priority: Complete these three faction quests immediately upon arriving in Hernand. Life Tools open up money-making and crafting options that are essential for progression.

What to Do First: Priority Checklist

Use this checklist for your first 5-10 hours:

Immediate (Hours 0-2)

  • Complete the prologue โ€” do not skip tutorials
  • Arrive in Hernand and speak to all key NPCs
  • Complete the first three faction quests to get Life Tools (fishing rod, logging axe, pickaxe)
  • Start collecting Abyss Artifacts โ€” prioritize Stamina upgrades

Early Priority (Hours 2-5)

  • Visit blacksmith Turnali in Hernand and refine your main weapon
  • Socket Abyss Cores into your equipment
  • Unlock Keen Senses I and start working toward Level 3
  • Find and activate Abyss Nexuses near Enquisher Satlery and Hernand Castle
  • Start cooking Grilled Meat before fights
  • Watch for Sealed Abyss Artifacts (purple icons on mini-map only)

Early-Mid (Hours 5-10)

  • Unlock Keen Senses Level 3 for Counter Skill โ€” this is a game-changer
  • Master the parry timing for Stamina and Spirit regeneration
  • Practice finishing blows (Light + Heavy simultaneously on staggered enemies)
  • Unlock Damiane and Oongka for side content
  • Try fishing at Three Saints Falls for income
  • Participate in the Archery Contest at Lion Quest Manor

Common New Player Mistakes

Avoid these pitfalls that trip up many new players:

  1. Ignoring parrying โ€” Enemies scale in difficulty. If you only dodge, you will run out of Stamina. Parrying regenerates resources.
  2. Spending Abyss Artifacts on Watch-and-Learn skills โ€” Save artifacts for Stamina, Health, and Spirit upgrades. Unlock Watch-and-Learn skills by actually observing NPCs and enemies.
  3. Neglecting cooked food โ€” Grilled Meat before boss fights is not optional. The regeneration is too valuable to skip.
  4. Not getting Life Tools early โ€” The first three faction quests in Hernand are critical. Do them immediately.
  5. Missing Sealed Abyss Artifacts โ€” These only appear as purple icons on the mini-map, not the world map. Keep your eyes peeled while exploring.
  6. Forgetting Blinding Flash โ€” Use it often to detect hidden Nexuses, solve puzzles, and burn vine barriers.
  7. Skipping secondary weapons โ€” Spears for crowd control and Greatswords for armored enemies are essential tools, not optional extras.

Final advice: Take your time. Crimson Desert does not reward rushing. Explore the Hernand region thoroughly, master Kliffโ€™s parry timing, cook before fights, and keep an eye on your mini-map for those purple Sealed Abyss Artifacts. The journey of Kliff and the Greymanes across 12 chapters is worth savoring.
